Committee agendas, minutes, and plans
The city provides safe and clean drinking water to residents and businesses all throughout Powell River.
Primary operations include watermain flushing, repair of service and main breaks within the city right of way, hydrant maintenance and repair, valve maintenance and repair, as well as testing and monitoring the water system. Drinking water is provided to more than 5,000 households through approximately 150 km of watermain network.
Residents and/or landowners are responsible for the water service line from the shutoff valve to the dwelling. If a leak occurs inside the dwelling and cannot be isolated by shutting off the main water shutoff valve inside the dwelling, the city will respond and shut off the service at the property line. There is a nominal fee for this service, which is available 24/7.
The Sanitary sewer system consists of main lines, services, manholes, pump stations, and treatment facilities, all of which are maintained on a daily basis. The system in Powell River has approximately 135km of main lines and carries sewage to the city’s treatment facilities.
The storm sewer system, which includes catch basins, has approximately 100 km of main lines and primarily drains into the ocean or other receiving waters.

Powell River’s Waterworks Regulations and Rates Bylaw 2425, 2015, stipulates four stages of water restrictions. At the minimum Stage 1 restriction, which is in effect most of the year, residential lawn sprinkling is limited to properties with odd-numbered addresses being limited to sprinkling on odd-numbered calendar days and even-numbered properties being able to sprinkle on even calendar days. Stage 2 water restrictions are common in the summer months and have more stringent requirements to protect the water levels in the City’s water reserves. For more information on Powell River water restrictions, please see Water Restrictions: Schedule C.
Powell River property owners can help by clearing nearby stormwater drains of leaves and debris or snow and accumulated sand. You should also check your property to ensure adequate drainage so that rainwater and snow melt does not cause pooling.
Sandbags are available at the Public Works Yard, 7160 Duncan St, during heavy rain events. For more information, contact the Public Works Yard at 604-483-1542.
You should contact BC ONE CALL at 1-800-474-6886, or visit bconecall.ca before you dig on your property. There is no cost for this service.
